Fiorentina suffered heartbreak in the Europa Conference League last season, but they are now back for more.

La Viola advanced to the final in Prague 12 months ago, only to lose to West Ham United in the worst possible circumstances. With 90 minutes on the clock, Jarrod Bowen raced clear to make it 2-1 to the Hammers and send the trophy back to east London.

Fiorentina are a touch fortunate to even be involved in continental competition this time around. They did not qualify via their league position in 2022/23, but Juventus’ suspension from Europe allowed Vincenzo Italiano’s team to take Italy’s last vacant spot.

They have made the most of it. Fiorentina edged out Rapid Vienna in the play-offs, then topped their group unbeaten. A 5-4 aggregate victory over Maccabi Haifa followed in the round of 16, before Fiorentina beat Viktoria Plzen 2-0 over two legs in the quarters.

They were made to work hard for that latter victory. Both the first and second matches against Viktoria finished 0-0 after 90 minutes. Eventually, Fiorentina scored twice in extra time to book their place in the last four.

The bookmakers believe an Aston Villa vs Fiorentina final is on the cards, but Olympiacos and Club Brugge will have something to say about that.

The Belgian outfit started out way back in the second qualifying round, which meant they had to play six matches before the group phase. Brugge’s European campaign thus started in July.

They took 16 points from a possible 18 in a dominant performance in Group D, before eliminating Molde and PAOK. 

Serie A is a stronger division than the Belgian Pro League, but that does not necessarily mean Fiorentina will have everything their own way in this tie.

Both teams can still go through and Italiano will ensure that his players do not show any signs of complacency ahead of the first leg on Thursday night.

Fiorentina and Club Brugge will both be looking to establish a first-leg lead when they go head-to-head on Thursday.

Fiorentina’s domestic season has been undone by inconsistency. For instance, they recently went through a spell of winning only two of 13 matches in Serie A.

That poor run of form saw the Viola drop from fourth place all the way down to 10th, although back-to-back victories over Salernitana and Sassuolo have since seen them rise up one spot in the standings.

Those wins will have given Italiano’s players confidence ahead of the visit of Club Brugge.

Fiorentina will also draw belief from a decent record when playing in front of their own fans: only four visitors to the Stadio Artemio Franchi have departed with a win in any competition this season.

With seven victories on the bounce, Club Brugge will fancy their chances of at least avoiding defeat on Thursday.

But although we expect this to be a tight encounter with little to choose between the two teams, home advantage could be a decisive factor.

Goals were few and far between in the quarter-final first legs involving Fiorentina and Club Brugge. The former drew 0-0 with Viktoria Plzen, while the latter eked out a 1-0 victory over PAOK.

This week’s tussle between the pair could follow suit. Neither manager will go gung-ho in pursuit of a victory on the night. We should expect both Fiorentina and Brugge to deliver measured performances in Tuscany.

That does not necessarily mean this will be a dull game. Yet it is worth noting that six of Fiorentina’s last 10 matches in Serie A this term have yielded under 2.5 goals, as did both legs of Club Brugge’s aforementioned quarter-final against PAOK.

It is true that Fiorentina turned on the style in a 5-1 thumping of Sassuolo at the weekend, but the circumstances on that occasion were very different.

Alas, goals could be few and far between when these two clubs butt heads for the first time in their respective histories.

Nicolas Gonzalez is Fiorentina’s top scorer this season with 13 goals to his name in all competitions, with four of those coming in the Europa Conference League.

Others have chipped in, including Lucas Beltran, Luca Ranieri and Antonin Barak with three apiece in this tournament.

The latter is a good pick in the anytime scorer market for Thursday’s meeting with Club Brugge.

An attacking midfielder, Barak operates as a No.10 in Fiorentina’s 4-2-3-1 formation. The Czech Republic international is 6ft 3in tall, but he is blessed with quick feet and a fantastic left peg.
