Leeds United close to agreeing new deal for midfielder.

There have been players that have come and gone at Leeds United, some loved and some… well, not so loved, but it is the players that are nurtured and developed by the club, the homegrown talent, that are the hardest to say goodbye to.

Leeds have had a great start to their sixteenth year out of the Premier League, winning two and drawing one of their opening three games, but player sales and niggling contract situations for main players have been what the fans have been most concerned about in recent weeks.

One player who the supporters at Elland Road have been more worried about any other this summer is local boy and midfield talisman Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips has now entered his last year on his current contract with the Whites, but has shown no indication that he wants to leave the club, quite the opposite as he seems to be totally content. But his contract situation means that he will soon be free to leave the club unless the two parties can reach an agreement on a longer stay.

Aston Villa were in hot pursuit of the midfield anchor-man this summer, placing multiple bids, but all were rebuffed by the West Yorkshire club, with Phillips agent even going public on his clients desire to remain in Leeds.

Today it is being reported by The Star this morning, with no real indication of a credible source, that Leeds United are “very close” to agreeing a new deal to remain at the club and continue his and the clubs pursuit of Premier League football.

Should this news be true, it will be a real bonus for Leeds United and their fans, it will also be a nice catalyst to build on as the team look to gather momentum this season.
