Aston Villa missed out on three targets, assistant head coach the reason why

Aston Villa missed out on their three main managerial targets because of their desire to appoint John Terry as assistant head coach, according to The Mirror.

It is understood that Rui Faria, Thierry Henry and Paulo Fonseca were all offered the Aston Villa job and turned it down. This was because the club wanted to appoint John Terry as assistant head coach in a bid to groom him for the manager’s job in the future. The club appointed former Brentford boss Dean Smith as boss on Wednesday evening.

After 22 years at Chelsea, Terry left the club in the summer of 2017 to sign for Aston Villa in the Championship. The former defender made 36 appearances in his only season with the club and was key in Villa’s push to the play-off final.

Terry is still a hugely popular figure at the club for this reason and the board were keen for him to make a return in some capacity after leaving Villa this summer.

Faria, Henry and Fonseca weren’t keen on Terry being appointed as their assistant at the club, all believing that they could bring in their own men to fill the position. After turning down the Villa job, Henry looks set to be appointed as boss of Ligue 1 side Monaco.

However, former Brentford boss Dean Smith was happy to work alongside Terry, and has also brought in his former Brentford assistant Richard O’Kelly to work in a similar role.

Smith’s first game in charge of his new club is at home to Swansea City on 20th October. Villa are currently 15th in the Championship table.
