‘A very big story…’ Michael Owen reacts to what he’s hearing out of Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have had an end-of-season collapse and the mood around the place is pretty low.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have had several chances to secure fourth spot and return to the Champions League, but in the end, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa got over the line.

Time and time again, they have shot themselves in the foot, including during Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

It was a huge game for many reasons, with the main headline being that Spurs could possibly help their London rivals in the Premier League title race if they beat Pep Guardiola’s men.

In the build-up to the game, Postecoglou was told how some of his fans wanted to lose the game because they didn’t want to give Arsenal an advantage heading into the final weekend of the campaign.

Throughout the match, you could hear anti-Arsenal chants from the home fans, especially when Erling Haaland opened the scoring, with the manager even having a verbal altercation with a supporter behind the dugout, although, it’s not clear what that was about.

Either way, post-match, Postecoglou wasn’t a happy man and he made his feelings clear by claiming that there are ‘fragile foundations’ inside and outside of the club.

When Michael Owen heard of those comments, he was taken aback because he couldn’t quite understand what the 58-year-old was alluding to.

The Spurs boss did highlight that these issues came to light ‘in the last 48 hours’, which made it all more interesting.

But Owen thinks something is brewing behind the scenes at Hotspur Way and he feels a ‘big story’ is about to break, as he told Premier League Productions (14/05/24 at 10:50 pm).

Angry Ange Postecoglou lets rip at Tottenham Hotspur

“He doesn’t look happy, does he?” responded Owen to Postecoglou’s comments. “I wonder what that could be. Whether he has had a meeting with the people above. Whether they were starting to look ahead to next season already, which would surprise me if he had.

“That’s a head-scratcher. But there is certainly something that’s affecting and annoying him, at the moment. That will come out in the hours and days to come. Not a happy man.

“When you think foundations. What can it be that has changed in the last 48 hours? It can’t be the playing squad. It can’t be the facilities. The training ground is probably the best in the country. The stadium is the best in the country. It has to be something up high. It has to be behind the scenes, a meeting with chief scouts, chairman or whoever it might be, in terms of recruitment. That will come out, I am sure, in the next few days because that seems like a very big story about to brew.”

You can’t blame Tottenham Hotspur fans

Let’s keep it straight, nearly every supporter would do what certain sections of Spurs fans were doing on Tuesday night.

If the boot was on the other foot, Arsenal would have wanted their team to lose also.

Yes, there was an odd atmosphere inside the stadium, but you can’t say that affected the team’s performance because they actually played well.

In fact, if Spurs took their chances, then they should have scored and, at the very least, secured a point.

Perhaps the Tottenham fans are right to ask why their team didn’t play like this in the north London derby? Or away at Chelsea and Newcastle United?
