Andy Goldstein says it’s ‘scary’ Manchester United could replace Erik ten Hag with London-based coach

Erik ten Hag produced his best moment in Manchester United colours before the international break when his side beat Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Before the game, it wouldn’t have been a surprise if many fans were dreading the thought of facing their bitter rivals and what the end result could be.

But when Amad Diallo was wheeling away in celebration in extra time, the celebrations inside Old Trafford were like scenes you had not seen in a long while.

Yes, Erik ten Hag won the League Cup last season and secured Champions League football to boot.

But you just felt this was the moment, perhaps the time when everything will now change for the under-fire Dutchman.

That doesn’t seem to be the case because the rumour mill is delivering all sorts of ‘nonsense’, according to Andy Goldstein.

The presenter and Manchester United fan was reacting to suggestions the club are keen on Brentford boss Thomas Frank taking over.

It’s something he clearly doesn’t want to see because, amid talk of ten Hag’s future, as well as who could replace him, was described as ’scary’ by the 50-year-old, as he told talkSPORT.

Thomas Frank at Manchester United

“Manchester United are reportedly interested in Brentford boss Thomas Frank in taking over from Erik ten Hag,” said Goldstein.

“There is one story I read yesterday that ‘the Man United board now aren’t looking to sack Erik ten Hag’, but if they do ‘they have already drawn up a list’. That makes no sense.

“There is so much nonsense about Erik ten Hag it’s scary now. Leave him alone. He is going nowhere. I don’t want him (Frank) – I would have Thomas The Tank Engine (over Gareth Southgate).”

Big few months ahead for Manchester United

The international break probably came at the wrong time for Man United because it halted their momentum.

Now it’s a tricky trip away at Brentford to try and pick up where they left off.

These are the types of games where ten Hag watches his players shoot themselves in the foot and take two steps back.

Man United simply can’t afford to drop any more points given that they are already nine points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in the race for Champions League football.
